Welcome to Cali Alley

General Info

Tucked away at 1012 Grayson St in Berkeley, Cali Alley is the kind of restaurant that feels instantly welcoming the moment you step in. The atmosphere leans casual, but there’s a thoughtful touch in how everything comes together-from the menu design to the way dishes are plated. It’s a spot that locals seem to return to often, and after one visit, it’s easy to see why.

The menu offers a creative mix of comfort food with bold, modern flavors. One of the standout options is the Half N Half Bao Plate, which gives you the best of both worlds if you’re torn between choices. The bao buns themselves are soft, slightly sweet, and perfectly balanced with their fillings. If you’re leaning toward something plant-based, the Grilled & Marinated Tofu Bao Buns are surprisingly satisfying, packed with flavor and texture that doesn’t feel like a compromise at all.

On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for something indulgent, the Fried Chicken & ‘SCB’ Waffle hits that sweet-and-savory note effortlessly. The chicken is crispy without being greasy, and the waffle adds just the right amount of sweetness. Meanwhile, the Fat Cat Spicy option brings a noticeable kick, ideal for those who enjoy a bit of heat without overpowering the dish. For something a little lighter but still filling, the Grilled Prawn Rice Bowl is a solid pick, combining fresh ingredients with a well-seasoned base.

Cali Alley also makes things easy when it comes to services. Takeout is smooth and convenient, making it a great option for a quick meal on the go. The wheelchair accessible entrance ensures that the space is inclusive, and the overall setup feels relaxed and approachable. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual lunch or grabbing dinner to enjoy elsewhere, the experience feels seamless.

Dessert options round out the menu nicely, offering a sweet finish without overcomplicating things. It’s clear that the focus here is on delivering food that feels both comforting and thoughtfully prepared. Reviews from visitors often highlight the consistency and the approachable vibe, which adds to the restaurant’s charm.

Overall, Cali Alley stands out not because it tries too hard, but because it gets the essentials right-good food, a welcoming space, and a menu that keeps you curious enough to come back and try something new.

What customers say?

“ I ordered the chicken and waffles with habanero salsa and it was exquisite. The food came out nice and hot (probably made to order by the sounds of the kitchen?) and was packed with flavor. Well seasoned, cooked beautifully, and not greasy at all. I'm excited to come back and try other offerings on their menu. *Note that it's outdoor seating only ”

“ Nice little restaurant in the cut , big food coming across the window! Take your time to find this little gem just off San Pablo in Berkeley. I had a tri-tip sandwich, it was so big I literally needed a cherry picker to get it out of the box. Tri-tip with thinly sliced seasoned with salt and perfect smoke , super tender and bathed in coleslaw . French fries were so amazing everybody at the table just helped themselves. You definitely want to get another order of those if you're with friends. It's rare that you find a homemade fry that's actually good these people do it extremely well. My friend is a fan of waffles and pancakes and was thrilled to see a waffle on the menu that was also fabulous. Mac and cheese was tasty and came in as one of the cheapest items on the menu but didn't lack flavor or size. Can't wait to come back. ”

“ This place is a bit hidden, especially at night. But I'm so glad we found it. The food was very good. I got the chicken sandwich. It was soo good, crispy and big! Cheesecake was amazing, small though. We got it with fresh blueberries . So good. It's well lit at night and the heaters were on if you want to sit in the patio area (although they weren't up as high as I would've like because I was still pretty cold). But it's a cute, cozy ducked off spot. ”

“ I had the tofu bowl. It was fresh and the flavors were excellent. With tax and tip, it came in just under $20. A little pricey but everything is expensive now with this inflation. I’d definitely go back to have it again if I’m in that part of town. ”

“ Very cute small outdoor dining area, quick service. I had the Cali alley burger and it was delicious and a good size without being too tall and messy like many other burger places. The fries were crispy and fluffy! Will definitely come back ”

“ Best fried chicken sandwich I've had (and I've had a few) and consistently good! Great spot to relax too ”

“ Burger was juicy and flavorful. Location is also very unique. More on the pricey side for a Burger and fries. ”
